Mediation & Arbitration Attorney Alan Swanson has vast experience serving as mediator and arbitrator in a wide variety of disputes throughout Olympia and Thurston County. Mediation is a formal settlement conference. Typically the parties briefly meet together with the mediator and thereafter go into separate rooms with their own attorneys (if any), and the mediator shuttles between the rooms in an attempt to broker an accord. However, the mediator does not have the authority to decide any contested matters and the parties may opt to discontinue the mediation at any time if settlement does not appear likely. Arbitration, on the other hand, is like an in-formal trial.
